Trying to characterize a person by the color of his eyes is a meaningless idea, because the color of the eyes can only tell about genetic inheritance. Dark eye color is common among residents of the equatorial zone and northern latitudes. In the south, it protects the eye from exposure to sunlight, and in the north - from solar reflection on the snow. Scientists have proven that at the genetic level, dark eye color prevails over light colors. What does eye color depend on? The answer to this question is easily explained by the example of newborns.
Change in eye color
The human eye has an amazing feature - to change the congenital color upon reaching 2-3 years of age. Moreover, such a process is possible only in the case of changing light colors to dark ones. In other words, if a child is born with blue eyes, then subsequently the eye color may become green or brown. But if brown color is innate, it will remain so until the end of life. This once again proves that dark color prevails over light.
The process of changing the color of the eyes depends on the amount of pigment of melanin accumulated in the iris. It accumulates in the body for up to three years, and the more of it, the darker the eyes will be. That is what determines the color of the eyes, which may change several years after birth. In addition, during the life of a person, melanin tends to accumulate in the body and, with age, the eyes darken imperceptibly. The amount of melanin in the body is determined by heredity and does not decrease in life, so the reverse process of lightening the eyes is impossible.
There are interesting cases when melanin is completely absent in the iris. In such cases, the eyes have a shade of red and this is due to transmission of the color of blood in the blood vessels passing through the iris. People with such eyes are called albinos. However, such cases are quite rare and are exceptions to the rules.
